How Many Entries of A Typical Orthogonal Matrix Can Be Approximated By Independent Normals? Short title: Normals Approximate Matrix Entries

چکیده
We solve an open problem of Diaconis that asks what are the largest orders of pn and qn such that Zn, the pn× qn upper left block of a random matrix Γn which is uniformly distributed on the orthogonal group O(n), can be approximated by independent standard normals? This problem is solved by two different approximation methods. First, we show that the variation distance between the joint distribution of entries of Zn and that of pnqn independent standard normals goes to zero provided pn = o( √ n) and qn = o( √ n). We also show that the above variation distance does not go to zero if pn = [x √ n] and qn = [y √ n] for any positive numbers x and y. This says that the largest orders of pn and qn are o(n 1/2) in the sense of the above approximation. Second, suppose Γn = (γij)n×n is generated by performing the Gram-Schmidt algorithm on the columns of Yn = (yij)n×n where {yij ; 1 ≤ i, j ≤ n} are i.i.d. standard normals. We show that ǫn(m) := max1≤i≤n,1≤j≤m | √ nγij − yij| goes to zero in probability as long as m = mn = o(n/ log n). We also prove that ǫn(mn) → 2 √ α in probability when mn = [nα/ log n] for any α > 0. This says that mn = o(n/ log n) is the largest order such that the entries of the first mn columns of Γn can be approximated simultaneously by independent standard normals.

Robust Photometric Stereo via Low-Rank Matrix Completion and Recovery
We present a new approach to robustly solve photometric stereo problems. We cast the problem of recovering surface normals from multiple lighting conditions as a problem of recovering a low-rank matrix with both missing entries and corrupted entries, which model all types of non-Lambertian effects such as shadows and specularities. Unlike previous approaches that use Least-Squares or heuristic ...

Recently there has been interest in determining the combinatorial structure of orthogonal matrices (see, for example, [BBS, S, W]). This interest is largely motivated by Paul Halmo s' challenge at the ``Qualitative and Structured Matrix Theory'' conference in 1991 to characterize the sign-patterns of orthogonal matrices which have no zero entries, and Miroslav Fiedler's conjecture at the SIAM A...

متن کاملA Simple Proof of Fiedler's Conjecture Concerning Orthogonal Matrices
We give a simple proof that an n×n orthogonal matrix with n ≥ 2 which cannot be written as a direct sum has at least 4n− 4 nonzero entries. 1. The result. What is the least number of nonzero entries in a real orthogonal matrix of order n? Since the identity matrix In is orthogonal the answer is clearly n. A more interesting question is: what is the least number of nonzero entries in a real orth...
متن کاملWavelets with Frame Multiresolution Analysis
A frame multiresolution (FMRA for short) orthogonal wavelet is a single-function orthogonal wavelet such that the associated scaling space V0 admits a normalized tight frame (under translations). In this paper, we prove that for any expansive matrix A with integer entries, there exist A-dilation FMRA orthogonal wavelets. FMRA orthogonal wavelets for some other expansive matrix with non integer ...
